This ball features a beautiful and unique design commissioned by NZ Māori Rugby League.

An explanation of the meaning of the design by the artist:

"This artwork represents Matariki which signals the Māori New Year.

"It is a time of renewal and celebration in Aotearoa NZ that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster. Stars of Matariki cluster are the mother Matariki and her 6 daughters Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā, Ururangi and Pohutukawa and Hiwa i te rangi.

"They all hold dominion over particular areas of our taiao (enviroment) as seen from a Te Ao Māori. (Māori world view)
 
"The Māori figure represents 'Ranginui' the Sky Father."
